Aw, crap... the worst part of your day...
So, picture this... You just got married and now you gotta wrangle together all your family as quickly as you can, because oh look, shit, the sun is perfect for bridal photos! (this is the point you will see your photographer look at you, look at the light, look at the family, then look back at you) Okay, now, this is another reason why hiring a professional photographer is SO IMPORTANT. Not only has your professional photographer done this over and over again (so, for them, this is the norm) but they are there as your help and guidance.
So...here's how to do it and survive.... But firstly know that family photo's ARE stressful and it will most likely be the hardest part of your day.
So, why are they so stressful?
Look, the only people who like family photo's is probably your mum. Mum's are great for lots of last minute entrants into family photo's! After the ceremony everyone just seem to wander off? I can't tell you why. Need the toilet? A ciggy? Did the bar tab just start? Its almost impossible to get everyone to HOLDUP, STAY STILL EVERYONE while we try to navigate the big list.... Ain't nothing worse then standing there in your heels in the heat while we take a billion different photo's. Your face will definetly hurt from trying to smile!
Which brings me to....the ole' family list
So, most brides like to hand photographers a big list of family photo's:
- Mum and Gary
- Dad me and Frank
- Frank and Jay
- Jay and Andrew and Alice and Claire and Claire C
- and x 20 more names
Although, we freaking LOVE how on top of all of this you are, I actually have no idea who these people are! (annnd you could probably put me on funny home videos yelling out "OKAY GUYS, I NEED A GARY... I NEED A JAY... I NEED AN ANDREW" - BLUGH!
so, you know what you do? you give this list to a sister, to a family member, to a bestie... this is their job. its a very very very important job
Helping the photographer wrangle together our family for photos, get them ready, have the list, stand by the photographer and wait for their guidance on when they are ready for the next lot of people. Will pay in booze and food and thanks. The photographer will also love you a whole heap.
Can't be bothered writing a list?
Sweet! That's cool. That is actually the BEST way to do it. What we do in this instance is: I'll get you guys to stand in the middle and ill call over everyone to you.
It goes a little something like this:
"OKAY EVERYONE, I NEED THE BRIDES IMMEDIATE FAMILY AND ALL CROWD AROUND THE BRIDE AND GROOM FOR A BIG SMILE" - snap
"OKAY GUYS, I NEED EVERYONE BUT PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS OUT" - snap
"OKAY, GRANDPARENTS, THANK YOU, YOU GUYS ARE ALL DONE AND YOU CAN GO ENJOY A DRINK NOW" -snap
"OKAY PARENTS BIG CUDDLE ALL TOGETHER AND THEN WE ARE GONNA BRING IN THE GROOMS PARENTS TOO FOR A BIG NEW FAMILY PICCY!" - snap
"OKAY BRIDES PARENTS, THANK YOU SO MUCH, WE ARE GONNA DO THE GROOMS SIDE NOW...!!"
ETC ETC ETC ETC ETC
We have all night, if you remember a certain photo you wanted, lets just get them at the reception! You can stand behind them at the table or you can have a photo on the dance floor. Remember that although i KNOW the family photos are necessary, the best kinds are the FUN ones, the ones in the moment, the ones mid conversation having a laugh. Those are the family and friends moments you will look on over and over again...
